Edge Blocked Requests metrics

Edge Blocked Requests metrics show why requests are being blocked at the WordPress VIP Platform’s edge layer before they reach the origin server. These metrics surface the total volume of blocked requests, a breakdown by block reason, a trend view over time, and a detailed table.

Select the tab labeled “Edge Blocked Requests” in the Insights & Metrics panel, located in the application view of the VIP Dashboard.

Filtering data

Select the time window for data using the date range picker in the top-right corner of the Edge Blocked Requests tab. The Chart and Table toggle switches visualizations between a graphical and tabular view.

If no data is shown for the selected time window, no requests were blocked at the edge during the selected period. This is expected for environments with low traffic or during periods of normal operation with no active block rules.

Summary cards

Four summary cards may be seen at the top of the tab. Each displays a percentage change relative to the previous equivalent time window.

The first Blocked Requests card shows the total number of requests blocked at the edge during the selected time window.

The following three cards display the top 3 block reasons by volume and their percentage of the total blocked requests.

Blocked Requests Distribution

The Blocked Requests Distribution panel shows the proportion of blocked requests attributed to each block reason as a donut chart (Chart view) or a percentage table (Table view). Select Copy Link to share a direct link to this chart, or Export as CSV to download the distribution data.

Edge Blocked Requests Over Time

The Edge Blocked Requests Over Time panel shows blocked request volume broken down by block reason over the selected time period as a stacked bar chart (Chart view) or a time-series table (Table view). This panel helps identify whether block volumes are increasing, decreasing, or shifting between reasons. Select Copy Link to share a direct link to this chart or Export as CSV to download the trend data.

Edge Blocked Request Details

The Edge Blocked Request Details table at the bottom of the tab lists every block reason observed in the selected time window with the following columns:

ColumnDescription
Block ReasonThe reason the edge blocked the request. Select the ⓘ icon for a description of the reason.
RequestsTotal number of requests blocked for this reason in the selected period.
PercentageShare of total blocked requests attributed to this reason.
TrendDirection of change relative to the previous period (↗ increasing, ↘ decreasing, or stable).

Select Copy Link to share a direct link to this table or Export as CSV to download the table.

Block reasons

The following block reasons may appear in Edge Blocked Requests metrics:

Block reasonDescription
AI Bot RedirectRequests from AI bots redirected by an edge rule before reaching the origin.
Limited JA3Requests blocked because their TLS JA3 fingerprint matched traffic patterns associated with potentially harmful activity.
Origin Response CodeRequests blocked by an edge rule based on the response code returned by the origin.
Rate Limit By SiteRequests blocked after the site-level edge rate limit was exceeded.
UA Deny ListRequests blocked because their user agent matched the configured deny list.
Wplogin Edge BlockRequests to the WordPress login endpoint blocked by edge protection rules.
Xmlrpc Edge BlockRequests to the XML-RPC endpoint blocked by edge protection rules.
Defensive ModeRequests blocked while the environment was operating with Defensive Mode engaged.

Not all reasons appear for every environment or time window. Block reasons with zero blocked requests in the selected period are omitted from the Blocked Requests Distribution and Edge Blocked Request Details panels.
