Many of the steps for launching a site require a user to have an App write role or greater for the site’s application. This role and permission can only be granted to other users by a user with an Org admin role.
Lower the domain’s Time To Live (TTL)
To ensure that a DNS change from an old hosting provider’s address to VIP’s address is recognized as quickly as possible, lower the domain’s TTL to 300 (seconds, or five minutes) or lower. Check with the domain’s DNS provider for specific instructions on how to do this on their system.
Decide on the TLS approach
- Let’s Encrypt is available by default for all domains.
- Custom TLS certificates can be installed from other certificate authorities.
Confirm that the site is ready for launch
It is important to ensure that the site is working as planned before a launch. This is particularly critical if most of the site development has been performed in a local environment. Set aside time to thoroughly review and test the site on the VIP production environment.
Ensure that a site is working as expected (with no launch-blocking bugs on the production environment) at least two business days prior to launch.
Map the domain
Add the domain (i.e.
www.mysite.com) for the upcoming site launch to the Domains panel of the VIP Dashboard. Domains have specific environment associations, and an environment (e.g., Production, Develop) can be selected from the dropdown located at the upper left of the VIP Dashboard application view.
The version of the added domain (
www or non-
www) will be the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) for the launched site. Redirects between the
www or non-
www variants of a domain are automatic on single sites but must be configured for multisites.
At launch, the added domain will most often replace the site’s VIP convenience domain (i.e.
mysite.go-vip.net) when launching a single site or the main site (ID 1) on a multisite.
Scheduling a supported launch with VIP
To request support of the VIP team, a launch will need to be scheduled with a Launch Technical Account Manager and the VIP Support team.
The supported VIP site launch hours are Monday to Thursday, 9:00 am – 8:00 pm (09:00 – 20:00) UTC. Launching during this hours provides the most support coverage to help ensure that any issues that may be encountered during the launch can be discovered and fixed as quickly as possible. VIP-assisted launches must be scheduled at least five business days in advance. This gives both the customer and the VIP team time to confirm that the site is in good working order, draft and confirm a launch plan, and identify and fix any last-minute issues that may arise.
To schedule a launch, create a VIP Support ticket with the following information:
- Requested launch date and time, including timezone.
- For WordPress multisite, the ID of the network site(s) that will be launched.
- Current site URL (i.e.
- Launched URL (i.e.
- Network site ID: The site ID can be found by running
wp site listagainst an environment with the VIP-CLI, or by navigating to Network Admin > Sites in the multisite environment. Locate and hover over the site that will be launched from the list of sites in the Sites dashboard. Select the Edit link that appears below the listed site. The site’s ID is the numeric value at the end of the loaded URL. For example:
